Ashton Fletcher Irwin (born July 7, 1994) is an Australian singer-songwriter and the drummer of 5 Seconds of Summer, along with band members Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, and Michael Clifford.
Ashton was not an original member of the band, he only joined in December 2011 when 5 Seconds of Summer was in need of a drummer for a gig. He is the oldest member of the band.
Early Life
Ashton Fletcher Irwin was born in Hornsby, Australia on July 7, 1994. He is the eldest child of Anne Marie Irwin, with a younger sister named Lauren Dawkins and a younger brother named Harry Dawkins and was raised in Australia. His father’s name is unknown as his parents separated when he was young. He holds an Australian nationality and is of mixed ethnicity. He is a Christian and owns a dog named Indie. While growing up, Ashton attended and graduated from Richmond High School.
Career
From early childhood, Ashton was fascinated by music. After getting his own drum set, his step-father and uncle (both in bands) taught him to play. The first song Ashton ever learned on drums was Holiday by Green Day. Over the years, he learned to play the piano, saxophone, and guitar as well.
Before joining 5 Seconds of Summer, Ashton started his music career in 2011 with a band named “Swallow The Goldfish”, within this band he has written and performed songs original songs.
Before he was asked to join 5SOS, Ashton hated the band since they would always forgot the words to songs while they made their YouTube videos. He joined as the band's drummer on December 3, 2011.
In September 2020, Ashton released his solo project, Superbloom. Although he remains a part of the band, Ashton wanted to experiment on the side and document his won journey through music, depression, addiction, and relationships.
