"Thin White Lies" is a song by 5 Seconds of Summer and appears as the tenth track on their fourth studio album, CALM.

Background[]

"I love the groove in the chorus. We were going for a Cure thing on the guitar in the verses. My favorite lyric in it is ‘I don’t think I like me anymore.’ It’s so honest, when you get to a point that you feel like a stranger to yourself—I like how this song captures that moment."[1]

This song, and all of the songs in CALM, was teased in the album trailer; which came out on February 5. It was also teased by Luke and Calum on an Instagram live.

In an album commentary, Calum Hood said:

"...this is a song that’s a peculiar one to me as I think it serves a specific purpose on the record in terms of its tonal quality and its lyricism. I think most of the lyrics for the chorus were actually written over lunch, but I am really excited to play this one live, and it’s very influenced by ‘The Cure’ in terms of the guitar tones..."

Lyrics[]

I don't feel your love
But I don't ask too many questions
The words, they are too much
When you show me my reflection

When the sun goes down, we all get lonely
Watch me as I disappear
These empty sounds and endless stories
So tell me what I wanna hear (Thin white lies)

Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah
Callin' my name, I don't wanna stay
But I'm wide awake, I'm wide awake (Thin white lies)
Just one more taste of you, my love (Thin white lies)
Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah

You never call me out
You know exactly where I'm goin'
You got me by the mouth
But she said she love me, she don't show it

When the sun goes down, we all get lonely
Watch me as I disappear
These empty sounds and endless stories
So tell me what I wanna hear (Thin white lies)

Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah
Callin' my name, I don't wanna stay
But I'm wide awake, I'm wide awake (Thin white lies)
Just one more taste of you, my love (Thin white lies)
Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah

I don't think I like me anymore
Can someone tell me who I was before?
I don't really like me anymore
Anymore, anymore (Thin white lies)

Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah
Callin' my name, I don't wanna stay
But I'm wide awake, I'm wide awake (Thin white lies)
Just one more taste of you, my love (Thin white lies)
Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah
(Thin white lies)

I don't think I like me anymore
Can someone tell me who I was before?
I don't really like me anymore
Anymore
